1024 x 768 gets my vote. Anything larger requires scrolling or more likely reduction to 75%.

My screen resolution is 1680x1050, 1024x600 on my netbook.

Maybe I'm stating the obvious, but why not make it so your pages naturally resize to whatever fits in the browser?
With quick googling I found http://home.comcast.net/~urbanjost/semaphore.html which has some javascrïpt examples that automatically resize the hotspots along with the image.

Again, why not consider dynamic resizing? If you do it right you could make everybody happy..

the BRAIN is right. it's easier than 1024x78 'fixed'
