Very excited to play this new adventure, but I'm stuck at what I think is the first hurdle. I cannot get past the scene with the bandits, other than getting the bad ending. I assume there is something you have to do to stop Geraldine, but I can't find it!

I found all the other alternate situations, but is there a different or "bad" outcome in the encounter with the three soldiers (outside the wagon)? Or can that encounter only end one way?

No alternative in this scene.
In the full game, there are 4 traps that drive to bad ends and 3 different final scenes.

Masterly done Mr. Shark, it amazes me as to how you can continue to turn out these stories, one great success after the other, now my thoughts turn to the future and i wonder if you may be training a apprentice to carry on your fantastic works, the artistry of your creations must be passed on for all mankind and enjoyment for all the artistry of Shark creations and styles of game making, your particular stile of game play is far superior to all the rest and has no equals. Thank you Mr. Shark and team for another great game. I do not enter into particulars of the game at this time for fear of spoiling it for the followers of your work.

I must be having a senior's moment.
Is the option that starts the good-path through the old woman's hut scene occur before or after the dream starts?

Before ... and the old woman's words of at the end of the bad scene are a hint to find the right one.

The Ransom is the best game I ever played - the first part is the best for me...

Hope for more in the future (more fantasy)

Thank you to both Shark and LRM.
After reading your replies and re-reading the Witches statement (for the n-th time) I was able to finish the new game. It appears that senior's moment was only temporary.
