Popularity of adult games on P.A.T.R.E.O.N

Well, last night i was browsing through a huge list of adult games that currently have a P.a.t.r.e.o.n page
I was a bit surprised and intrigued by seeing some quite good games and authors i like (at least on my personal opinion), games like the ones from Tlaero, getting just $1600, and then all those rpg maker games, i played a few before, and a few others last night, getting like $3000, $5000, $8000 ?
Again, this is my personal opinion but i don't find appealing at all playing rpg maker games that seem like games i played on my super nintendo 25 years ago, they put a few nice pics advertising the game, but then you download the game and spend 90% of the time playing the game controlling some tiny silly characters through some awful looking scenarios, and the story, didn't find anything special at all.
What are your opinions on this, what may cause some games be so popular and easy for people throw their money into and others supposedly the good stuff getting so little cash?

taboos. Except a few most have a clear theme. Incest, incest, incest. Guess what more incest. Incest theme + cracked RPGmaker + cracked daz3d + pat reon + ridiculous perks = milking the customer. And that's why I hate most of those developers. Sp;ecially considering most of the models you'll see 1 one game is just a basic model you encounter into the next game.

Furry is also a good theme to catch on, but there you at least have some artists who have to create their own work.

as a example what i think of patron i'd leave you this, what i found some time ago which i find to be the honest truth just remove the red /

In addition to the above, with which I agree, I think part of the disparity in funding lies in what the potential patrons want. The really good (in my opinion) games are NOT "nice-to-meet-you-let's-fuck" type of boob and ass fests that so many of the - umm - less sophisticated players want. They want to wander around a poorly realized game world, see huge boobs and boink everything in sight with little or no real story. Developers like tlaero & Mortze, Wolfschadowe and others of that sort don't do that. They write compelling stories that one actually has to READ (gasp!) and comprehend (gasp, gasp!) and feature normal, good-looking people who don't look like comic super heroes and don't have boobs bigger than their heads or dicks the size of their arms. I think of it as adult gaming for grown-ups, although I'll likely get flamed for that. I don't really look down on those who prefer the "other" kinds of adult games, I just don't identify with them.

Back when I could devote more time and money to creatives on P**reon, I supported the big names like the two mentioned above along with some new unknowns who were trying to break into the same type of game development. The newcomers were doing some really nice things but not getting a lot of support because their initial postings or "version 0.1" and so on were concentrated on setting up interesting stories with good-looking characters but only had limited sex scenes and b-cup boobs. They were only seeing support numbers in the low hundreds of dollars as opposed to thousands like the incest and rape/bondage crowd see. It is a shame but the potential audience seems to be skewed in that direction. Newer game developers like nverjos and Dede Kusto are creating some interesting and pretty stories with very limited resources and pretty low patronage because their games are more along the AIF model and not mindless run-shoot-and-fuck fests. It is all about the majority of the donors and what they seem to want.

For me it is also the VN/AIF versus rpg maker concept.
Most people doing a VN style erotic game release it "at once", a real story is told and you need a lot of images for it, as far as I remember > 1300 in the new Tlearo/Mortze game.
The game is released with around 14 days delay for everybody.
People doing rpg maker games need way less images for that, keeping players busy running around in the map, so let's say with around 50 images (plus rpg maker stuff) you can produce content you can use for monthly updates so a patron has more (game related) benefits for his patronage (not meant to devalue rpg maker creators work, some of them, like mentioned by JFR, do really great stories).

And for sure it deals with fetishes/obsessions, a lot of things you can do in hentai/3D games would send you right to prison in RL.

Thanks for your input, i couldn't agree more with what you guys say, it makes sense to me now, the more controversial (incest stuff and so) and simple let's fuck right now kind of games the better for that crowd throw their money into...

I even tried 1-3 of these incest-stuff games...just to see, how they would built up such a complex/mostly impossible theme. I laughed my ass of after 5 minutes of play and deleted them. Hardly to believe, that they gain that much money with such a bullshit.

the average does not want a story, they want to masturbate 5 minutes in game. And even that's to slow.

Coming late in the discussion

I personally consider that Patre.on is not a shelf of consolided products, many of this games are just concepts and ideas throwed to see which one worst the investment. Creators are not been paid as a reward for what they done, they get support for what they will possible do.

I also disliked the platform that looks like classic Zelda game. Sometimes they get really tiresome to perform stupid actions as collect garbage by moving the character for several minutes.

But there are completely different concepts, many success cases. Sometimes we see some great ideas with bad implementations but as the game progress, fixes an so on, they turn into good games.

I don't know if it is against rules to give some examples of artists names, but I could give dozens of examples pointing some interesting features.

I'm so sick of seeing a new rpg maker game popping up every other day, honestly i can't take any of them seriously, yeah, new discussions here on forum about one or two rpg makergames that supposedly have great story and so, but i look at the graphics and again i say, seriously? but surprisingly many people are willing to pay for them, and i just wonder if people are that desperate to play anything that has only 1 inch of porn on it, like there isn't any other porn games out there.
