The Linux Way of enjoying AIF

Postby Venom » Wed, 15Jul08 13:09

As some of you guys and fine ladies (wink) may know I recently changed the my main OS from W7 to Linux.
Which makes it bit harder to be able to run certain programs. I'm currently having some issues with getting adrift up and running on my system, so I can enjoy BBen's latest game (Let me In).

Since i don't want to further off-topic the game topic itself, i though it might not be a bad idea to open a new topic that is solely on the Linux Way of enjoying aif games aka a one stop topic that holds walkthroughs on setting up platforms to enjoy aif games

That being said can any one help me getting that @#! adrift running on my Linux system

Hi Venom!

Well it depends what version (3, 4 or 5) of Adrift was used for making the game you want to play. As far as I've read only for version 5, you should install Mono for your Linux distro and download the linux version of Adrift runner from the Adrift site.
I've a Linux (Ubuntu 14.04) box myself but for several reasons I don't use Mono, so I can't give an opinion.
What I've tried once in the past was gargoyle for a game in Adrift 4 and it was a complete disaster.
Not knowing what Linux flavour you use I don't put any links here.
Cheers!

Ok, here are the steps you should take. I must say that I took some time to reply as I wanted to test it myself:

1.- Open your Software Center (within Ubuntu) and search for mono runtime. You should see two puppies. Install the first one.
2.- Always in Software Center search for libmono-corlib2.0-cil and install it.
3.- Still in Software Center search for libmono-microsoft-visualbasic8.0-cil and install it.
4.- Go to
Code: Select all
http://www.adrift.co/download
and download the Linux version of their player to for example your Downloads folder.
5.- Extract the downloaded file to Downloads/adrift.
6.- Open your terminal and issue the following commands (one at a time):
Code: Select all
sudo su
- you'll be asked for your password, so type it and enter
Code: Select all
cd Downloads/adrift
cp -r * /

Don't close the terminal yet!
7.- You are ready to use Adrift 5. Type the following command:
Code: Select all
adrift

8.- Miracle! Adrift player will open. But we still have two problems left:
a)- Every time you want to play you should issue the command by terminal as "root";
b)- You'll not be able to play adrift executables (*.exe), only *.taf files.
9.- For the second problem I'm afraid I can't help. Only the author of the game can furnish you with the *.taf version.
10.- As for the first one, I can put here a solution that I don't like very much due to some possible security issues. Honestly I'm not sure if it's risky or not.

Cheers!

thanks for the information

here are the commands that i run on my apt supported linux distro
i'm willing to make a .sh file for the linux techie people
i should have know when i show the /usr folder where i should have dropped it

Code: Select all
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install libmono-corlib2.0-cil libmono-microsoft-visualbasic8.0-cil
cd ~/Downloads
wget http://www.adrift.co/files/adrift-5.0.33.tar.gz
tar -xvzf adrift-5.0.33.tar.gz
sudo cp -r usr /
rm -rf adrift-5.0.33.tar.gz usr/

you still have to run adrift in sudo mode though because locked .xml file permission
todo check if mono runtime in the ubuntu software-center is another package then the one from the apt-get

From what I read here, you missed installing mono runtime...
