I just read the article and came back here to comment only to find you'd taken the words right out of my mouth!
Seriously though, he probably has a point
but because he's only recently discovered the genre he doesn't realise how far it's come...
Imho Meet n Fuck's always been a joke, so that's a bit like shooting fish in a barrel. Gangaro Girl dates back to the days of the dinosaur, so is hardly a prime example of current AOG. As for Hungirly, I must admit I've never been tempted to part with my hard-earned but I don't think it's been updated for years, so the site's probably just left as a trap for the unwary.
That just leaves Chaotic's games.. but I don't see how he's saying anything much different to what we've already said a hundred times in the lagoon... I had to agree with his views when it comes to the flimsy links between the articles you need to complete some of Chaotic's goals. The difference is that I realise that most of those things were put in because people were finishing the games too quickly. You don't have to go far in the lagoon to find grumbles (mine included) about Chaotic's policy on paying for games. Does this guy think he's telling us stuff we don't already know?
I happen to consider AOG as basically a popular art form like film, TV or music. Just like any other area of the arts new artists will be inspired by ideas they've seen and, given the relative youth of the genre, they will sometimes take them to a level the original artist may never have dreamed of.
In the meantime there will be quite a few false starts where people try stuff that doesn't quite work... but I bet if you were able to go back in time you'd find some dude sitting right at the back of the cave scribbling "Some of the guys had this idea about building fences so we can trap animals and breed them for food and grow crops on our own doorstep. Too lazy to go out hunting and gathering, eh? Well they've wasted their time - a mouse could knock over some of the fences they've built so far"...
And the main point he's missed is - It's fun! Pass some time playing one of Shark's games or sudoku?? I know which would be more likely to put a smile on my face..
