Ariane in Paradise Status Report: “Day 1” Done:

Ariane in Paradise is divided up into 3 days, each one being sort of a mini visual novel, which if successful leads to the next day.

I recently completed “Day 1”, meaning I’m a third of the way done. Day one, like act 1 of a story, is about establishing character and settings. [..]

There are three main paths the story can take. One focuses on the island’s past, one on the present, and one on the future. [..]

It took me about 9 months to finish day 1. So far there are 235 pictures, and over 1000 lines of dialogue.

I practically have to start over to establish day 2. [..] One of the 5 sets is set in a casino, so creating a “game” challenge is pretty easy for that one. Another one is going to a beach. [..]

Could a Female Player Character work in DA and SITA?:

There are around 50 or so pictures in the game that show the players hands, arms, or “other parts” that would have to be redone with a female player model. Alternate versions of a few scenes like the vista photo shoot scene and the strip club scenes would have to be added. I could also have some fun rewriting the dress store and lingerie store scenes with a female player character shopping for herself as well.

But for the most part, Date Ariane could work with a female player character.

There are no promises either way, and definitely no time table on this. It is something I am just thinking about, and thought I’d open up a discussion.

It might be fun, but at the same time I have pointed out every reason why it is not necessary and probably not worth it.

Another part, too much time forgotten is the text.
English is really poor for differentiate male and female action.

You can easily wrote : Dominique was born in 1958.
How can you tell if Dominique is male or female ?
In french, the differentiation exists:
Dominique est né en 1958 <- male version
Dominique est née en 1958 <- female version.

To sum up,in english one sentence might be enough, but in french (and other languages), two are required if you want to do it properly. I mean without using stuff like né.e or né(e)...

Same issue work also with camille, frédérique... Or even worst : Robin is a male firstname in french, but generally a female one in US !

English gender neutrality is a real pain in you-know-where for many of us, translators. I still feel sorry for changing Tora's gender in Dreaming with Elsa. It's also a potential gag-killer: think about the MC starting a new job and being called to his boss office, he assumes his boss would be a man but it's actually a woman. In many languages you'll have two different words for that role (as in Spanish 'jefe'/'jefa') that would expose her gender from the start, not to mention the whole constellation of adjectives and pronouns with gender inflexion that might also appear in the text before the MC actually sees who his boss is.
