Most of the virtual dating games (Ariane's Chaotic's, and Phreaky's and mine) have images sized for a 1024x768 screen. That's relatively safe, since just about everyone has a screen that size or bigger. But I'm wondering how much bigger people's computer monitors are.

I'm asking because Phreaky and I are shrinking our images to fit in the small screen size. The more natural size for our games would be 1280x1024. If we used that size, it would make all the images larger, but could be too big for some player's screens.

So, for fans of the various "Virtual Date" games, could you answer the following quick survey?

Thanks,
Tlaero

What is the resolution of your computer monitor?
a) It's ____ x _____ (fill in the blanks)

b) I don't know, but when I played the various dating games (Keeley, Ariane, Chaotic's etc) there was a lot of extra room for the window.

c) I don't know, but when I played the various dating games (Keeley, Ariane, Chaotic's etc) the window almost filled the screen.

a) 1280x1024 or 1920x1080 depending on the machine.

That said... I am old school, and I know that many people have older computers. For instance the machine that I have that is running at 1280x1024 is well over a decade old!

This is why even today I still try to design for 640x480 resolution, and no more than 800x600. If I want to include higher resolution content I will leave that as bonus material for wallpapers and such which I will reproduce at more extreme resolutions.

I do enjoy premium content such as 1080p movies etc, but I would never expect people to have the ability to view that content appropriately.

I hope that helps.

a) 1920x1080, but a lot of time I don't play things full screen so that I can have Notepad (or something similar) open in order to take notes.

Below you will find screen resolutions of Playforceone users.

1. 1024x768 - 16,99%
2. 1280x800 - 15,68%
3. 1366x768 - 12,43%
4. 1280x1024 - 12,02%
5. 1440x900 - 9,39%
6. 1680x1050 - 7,34%
7. 1920x1080 - 5,88%
8. 1600x900 - 3,74%
9. 1152x864 - 2,09%
10. 1920x1200 - 1,62%

If you think about a game resolution in a browser, please remember that browser itself takes space. Usually around 120 px from the top / bottom and around 50px from both sides.

I realise Webpage designers can "ask" the client machine which browser it is being served (within a select group).

While cookies can run other tests can they be made to discern the resolution of the client? If so, then you could report to the user to adjust the screen resolution or download from a more compatible version size. Or can the cookie be built smart enough (assuming the possibility just noted) to automatically from a select library of resolutions?

A 1280*1024

One solution might be to use an HD image, which will be reduce by the webbrowser :

Ie : you use a 1440*900. Thank's to JS, you resize it to fill 1024*768 monitor without scrollbar.

That also mean you must avoid MAP in your picture, but this part can easily be replaced by js using the coordinate of the pointer in the picture.

Heh! Trust me to be awkward - the Asus Eee PC 1000H I use for most of my browsing and viewing at present is a mere 1024x600 native screen size. Mind you, I also use a Nokia N900 which can cope with an amazing amount of web-born stuff on its 800x480 screen

I quite fancy going to the other extreme, but for some reason not many manufacturers are building WUXGA (1920x1200) laptops - Dell are a notable exception.

a) 3840*1024 (tripplescreen-setup ftw)

d) Results from Steam's Hardware survey:

date: January 2011
in my estimations, it deals with about 5 million active gamers all over the world.

3040 x 1050 0.87%
3120 x 1050 1.46%
3200 x 1080 9.38%
3200 x 1200 4.14%
3280 x 1080 0.63%
3360 x 1050 6.21%
3360 x 1080 2.58%
3360 x 1200 0.69%
3360 x 2100 1.11%
3520 x 1200 1.21%
3600 x 1080 7.97%

3840 x 2400 1.42%
5120 x 2880 0.65%
Other 24.25%

as mentioned; browsers themselves take some portion of that size.
however; with a tiny bit jscrïpt, you can have a page run in fullscreen-mode and at certain resolution.

a) 1366 x 768 (a 11.6" netbook) and 1680 x 1200 (PC)
Keep in mind that most recent hardware is widescreen so you may run into issues with bigger 4:3 resolution as you're likely exceeding the vertical space. Even today I wouldn't use more than 600 px in height as it's a pain to scroll vertically when playing a browser game. A real-time rendered 3D or 2D game is a different story as it's easier to adapt the space to the hardware and IMO people are more used to play those in fullscreen mode.
